The tot died less than four months after moving in with soon to be adopted parents Jamie Varley and John McGowan-Fazackerley.

But a jury at Preston Crown Court heard instead of it being in a place of love and safety he was sexually assaulted and abused resulting in 40 separate internal and external injuries.

The prosecution described the video as 'innocuous'. But on the fourth day of the trial at Preston Crown Court a series of photos and video clips were shown which the prosecution said painted a different picture of what was happening in the house in Staining.

Prosecutor Peter Wright KC said the images show a little boy who was abused physically, psychologically and sexually during the time he was in the care of the defendants.

Mr Wright KC showed photos and clips captured on Varley's phone and shared with McGowan-Fazackerley which said demonstrated the cruelty Preston suffered.

On June 12, photos of Preston playing naked in a paddling pool and on a play mat were shared from Varley's phone to McGowan-Fazackerley's device with explicit jokey comments.

More footage captured on the eve of Preston's first birthday show the little boy falling asleep as loud music from the film Moana blasted from the TV. In the clips, Varley identified by his checked pyjama bottoms is heard shouting 'boo' - as he tried to startle the baby awake.

Around 40 minutes after the videos of Preston being 'kept awake' were recorded, another video was recorded showing the baby lying on the floor. The prosecution say he 'appears unwell'.

Varley then texted his partner saying Preston was 'ill again' and 'might have had another seizure' but said he was not going to take him to hospital, the court heard.

The videos show the cruelty Preston faced at the hands of Varley, and the paddling pool pictures, amount to indecent images, the prosecutor told the court.

A number of photos taken on other days clearly showed bruising on Preston's head and arm.

Both defendants deny all allegations.

The trial continues on Tuesday.
