Marton Post Office, on Preston New Road, closed last October after postmaster Ian Straughan’s contract was ended.

Now Post Office bosses plan to reopen the branch with extended opening hours at Smileys Convenience Store, Waterloo Road, which is 322 meters away from the closed branch.

A six-week consultation period has been launched to give customers a chance to comment on the plans.

The Post Office says, should the reopening go ahead, the branch would be open from 7am to 10pm seven days a week.

This would be 54 hours a week more than were previously offered.

Services would be available from a counter within the existing shop.

Simon Drinkwater, Post Office regional manager, said: “We understand how important having a Post Office is to residents in Marton and we are confident that this new modern Post Office service will meet the needs of the local community and secure services for the future.

“This modernisation is part of a major investment programme, the largest in the history of the Post Office.”
