Hundreds of young people in Blackpool have been handed the chance of a better future thanks to the support of a youth employment hub.

Since it was launched in March 2022, The Platform has supported more than 1,000 young people and helped 500 into work, training or education – with 290 of those finding jobs.

Based on the ground floor of Bickerstaffe House in Cookson Street, the hub is aimed at 16 to 24-year-olds with free one-to-one support to help them improve their skills, build confidence and prepare for employment, further education or entrepreneurship.

Coun Kath Benson, cabinet member for young people and aspiration, said: “We want to create a youth-friendly work industry across Blackpool, and The Platform is key to making this vision come to life – starting with its fantastic connections with some of the best organisations in the town.

“We are immensely proud of the work that is happening and as always, we are already focusing on working towards our next milestone.

“If you know anyone who is aged 16-24, who is possibly unsure of their next step or who may require additional support, please do get in touch with the friendly and experienced Platform team.”

The service was launched by Blackpool Council in partnership with the DWP (Department for Work and Pensions) and is currently funded through the Towns Fund.

It was named ‘The Partnership of the Year’ in this year’s ERSA Employability Awards recognising outstanding work in the employment support sector, for its partnership work with the DWP.

The Platform includes a team of youth work coaches from JobCentre Plus who coordinate with The Platform team to ensure young people within the 16-24 age bracket are referred to the service.
