£20m council housing scheme underway in Blackpool

Work has begun to build 131 new homes on the Grange Park estate in Blackpool as part of a £20m investment in council houses.

The first homes are expected to be ready to move into in 2023 with tenancies managed by the council’s housing company Blackpool Coastal Housing.

Blackpool firm RP Tyson Construction, which is also currently building 75 new homes at Troutbeck Crescent on Mereside, has started work to clear the first site on Dinmore Avenue.

Coun Ivan Taylor, cabinet member for housing, said: “It has been our aspiration for some time to create much-needed new homes on Grange Park and it is a really testament to everyone involved that they’ve managed to progress the scheme to this point despite all the challenges the pandemic has brought.

“The Tyson team has done a fantastic job building the new homes Troutbeck Crescent at Mereside.

“By employing a local firm we see real benefits to the local community, the vast majority of staff working on the site will live on the Fylde Coast.”

The project, will see the construction of 96 affordable houses, five bungalows and 30 sheltered apartments on two sites.

Land previously occupied by Christ the King Church and the Chepstow Road shops will accommodate 53 houses, while 78 properties will be built on the site of the former Grange Park Primary School off Dinmore Avenue.

The new homes will be partially funded by a grant from Homes England, while £660,000 from the European Regional Development Fund will support the installation of air source heat pumps in 30 of the homes and a new cycle path.

Jeremy Whittle, managing director of RP Tyson Construction, said: “As a locally based contractor we are absolutely delighted to have been selected to deliver this significant housing development.

“We have a very strong locally based supply chain and will look to engage with it on this development as we have done on Troutbeck Crescent.”
