Blackpool South MP Scott Benton launched the petition last August and has now collected 500 signatures.

Currently the resort is served by a single household waste and recycling centre on Bristol Avenue in Bispham.

Many residents in the south of the town traditionally used the tip on Everest Road in St Annes, which was operated by Lancashire County Council, until a decision to close it was taken in 2010 as part of cost cutting measures.

Mr Benton has submitted the petition to Blackpool Council for consideration.

He said: “I launched the petition to bring back a waste and recycling centre in South Shore after being contacted by a number of local residents on this issue.

“Currently residents and businesses are faced with a long trip to the north of the town, or have to pay and wait over five weeks for the council to collect larger items.

“This is completely unacceptable and prevents the improvement of our residential areas in the town.

“The council is currently in the process of considering options for next year’s budget and opening a new facility could be achieved through utilising existing capital resources or prudential borrowing. I would urge them to explore these options as part of the budget process.”
