The council’s executive has agreed an increase of 4.9 per cent on its share of the bill meaning households will pay £1,699 for town hall services.

Precepts of £226 to pay for policing (an increase of 7.1 per cent), and £72 for the fire service (1.9 per cent increase) will take the total bill to £1,997 for band D properties from April.

This compares to £1,900 for the current financial year.

The recommendations, which also included approving spending on services of £149m and savings of almost £20m, must now go to the Budget Meeting on March 8 for final approval.

The executive also approved the merger of the council’s street cleansing department with the bin collection and waste service, trading as Enveco, which will bring savings of £350,000.

Council chief executive Neil Jack said it was hoped to avoid compulsory redundancies as part of this year’s budget although up to 40 jobs are at risk.

He said: “The main focus has been protecting the vulnerable, protecting services and protecting jobs where we possibly could.

“We haven’t seen any cuts to services for the vulnerable people of the town and we have been able to keep any job losses to a minimum.”

He said it was hoped there would be no compulsory redundancies as staff either took voluntary redundancy or were redeployed.
