Grass gripes spark U-turn call from MP

Blackpool Council has slashed the amount of money it spends on mowing meaning only ‘priority areas’ are now being maintained.

That has prompted an outcry from residents concerned by both the visual and health impact of the policy.

Last weekend volunteers took it upon themselves to cut grass on Highfield Road and at Kincraig Park.

And now Paul Maynard, MP for Blackpool North and Cleveleys has urged the authority to think again.

Concerns have been raised for those who have asthma or suffer from hay fever, as well as by dog walkers, sporting groups and other users of the areas.

Mr Maynard said: “The decision by the Council to cut this vital budget was always going to create problems.

“I know from experience, having to pass a park near to my own home on a daily basis, how unsightly green areas can become when they aren’t maintained properly and the dangers it can pose to those with breathing difficulties or hay fever, and to general users of these spaces.

“I want the Council to think again about its grass cutting rotas and the service it provides, and to look at new ways of delivering that service.

“For example, the council could allow sporting groups and other community groups that utilise the green spaces to use their grass cutting equipment to ensure the necessary maintenance is carried out.

“I know that groups like the Bispham Junior Football Federation, who use the training area on the fields by Kelvin Road during the summer, would be glad to utilise the equipment, rather than it lying idle and the pitches neglected.”
