Cashino Gaming Ltd, trading as Mekur Slots, had been refused planning permission to convert a former Coral Betting Shop on Abingdon Street into an adult gaming centre amid fears it would tempt vulnerable residents into gambling.

Coun Fred Jackson told a previous meeting of the planning committee the council wanted to reduce the number of gambling outlets in the town because “of the temptation places like this puts in front of people.”

But an independent planning inspector has over-ruled the town hall decision on appeal.

Robert Walker said in his written decision: “There is no substantive evidence before me of any specific gambling problem in the locality that would be exacerbated by the proposal, particularly having regard to the previous and extant use as a betting shop.

“I note that the police raised no objections to the proposal during the application.

“Whilst there are residential flats within the street, this is a busy part of the centre where noise and activity during the evening and at night would be expected.

“I do not therefore consider that the proposal would give rise to an unacceptable level of noise and disturbance.”

He added the development would bring a vacant unit back into use, improving the vitality of the street.

The site is next door to an existing arcade operated by Warwicks Amusements, which was also turned down by the council but got the go ahead on appeal to the planning inspectorate.

Cashino Gaming already has a licence for the premises after an application to the council was approved in October last year, at the second attempt.

The company also secured planning permission from neighbouring Wyre Council last year to open similar premises on Victoria Road West in Cleveleys.
