A crowd estimated to be in the hundreds turned out at Blackpool’s Stanley Park on Friday as a show of solidarity following the death of George Floyd in America.

It was the first of two local Black Lives Matter protests, with the second to come at Lytham Green on Sunday, starting at the windmill at 1pm.

Yasmine Ballout, 18, from St Annes, one of the organisers of the Lytham protest, was among those at the Blackpool event, which was centred around the bandstand area and socially distanced.

She said: “It was a good turnout. It is important to get the message across and keep making the point that Black Lives Matter.

“We feel it is right to show our support to the black community and provide others the opportunity to do the same through the form of a peaceful protest.

“Although this idea started with a few young people, it has gained a lot of traction across social media and look forward to seeing plenty of people at Lytham on Sunday.

“We believe this is a community collective response to the Black Lives Matter movement and it is vital we maintain the message.”

The Lytham event will also be socially distanced and those attending bare asked to wear a face covering.
