Initial plans to pedestrianise Victoria Road West in Cleveleys have been scrapped, but the parking bays situated along the road will be temporarily closed from Wednesday.

Wyre Council will install concrete barriers to widen the footpaths, and disabled parking spaces will be retained.

Coun Alan Vincent, portfolio holder for resources at the council, said: "Widening the busy high street in Cleveleys will give shoppers more room, helping them to keep their distance from others when in the town.

"These actions are part of a range of measures we have taken to help our residents feel safe when they are out and about and also to encourage people to support our businesses as they reopen.

"Businesses across Wyre are very much looking forward to welcoming customers back after the national restrictions end, and we know that they have worked really hard to make their premises Covid-secure.

"We do hope that people will choose to show their support and shop local this Christmas."

Covid marshals will also be present in Cleveleys from today (November 30), in addition to other Wyre town centres, to "explain and encourage best practice and national coronavirus guidance."

The council said the marshals' jobs were to keep people safe, not to enforce Covid-19 regulations.

Coun Vincent continued: "You might notice our Covid marshals as they start to visit our town centres and high streets.

"Fear not, their intention is not to penalise businesses or residents, but to help keep people safe.

"They will be working with businesses to help them to operate in a Covid-secure way and create a safe shopping environment for our residents.

"As a shopper, you might be reminded of regulations such as keeping your distance whilst queuing, but please be assured they are here to help."
