The extra bins usually appear each summer, and more are added when hot weather is expected, the council said.

But it struggled to empty some of them after a high number of visitors and their vehicles blocked access to the prom.

The car park at Rossall Beach and the promenade itself was so crowded, that council vans driving down to empty the bins could not get to them.

A spokesman for Wyre Council said: "We have some extra bins out in this area over the summer, but this is increased when we know the weather will be nice and we expect more people visiting the coast.

"Our crews managed some additional collections of many bins but in some areas, for example on Rossall promenade, we could not get vehicle access due to so many cars and people blocking access."

The initiative between District Enforcement Ltd and Wyre Council to crackdown on littering resumed on July 1, after a break due to the coronavirus lockdown.

Fixed penalty notices of £100 continue to be handed out for littering or dog fouling.
