The household waste and recycling centre in Bispham will operate on a postcode basis - with only FY1 residents allowed in today, while those from other areas get their chance later in the week.

The tip has been closed since March 25 but measures are now in place to ensure it can operate safely.

Blackpool Council announced last week it would be re-opening the facility under a strict new system which it has urged people to make sure they follow.

Changes include reducing the number of bays from 21 to six, while access will only be from Moor Park Avenue in order to minimise traffic congestion.

The tip will open Monday to Friday for extended hours between 10am and 8pm, with designated days for each postcode area and residents must display proof of their address in their windscreen which will be checked before they reach the entrance.

Kerbside green waste collections will also resume this week so people are being urged to visit the tip only if absolutely necessary.

Other waste services which will also resume today are the Rover mobile recycling unit and Bulky Matters, the pre-paid collection service for larger items for recycling.

Here’s how the tip will operate:

 Initially, the centre will open with extended hours 10am until 8pm, Monday to Friday.

Residents will be asked to attend on a specific day according to their postcode to manage demand and social distancing.

The designated days are: Monday – FY1, Tuesday – FY2, Wednesday – FY3, Thursday – FY4, Friday – FY5.

The small number of Blackpool households in FY6 will be contacted directly with details of their designated day.

 Residents will need to display in their vehicle windscreen proof of their address which shows their postcode, which will be checked leading up to the entrance.

 The number of bays has been reduced from 21 to six.

People can visit by car, existing permit holders can visit in a trailer or small van but construction waste also known as inert waste will not be accepted.

 People must be able to lift and deposit the rubbish themselves or with anyone accompanying them. Staff will not be able to help visitors with their waste.
