Ivan and Sylvia Taylor tied the knot on December 17 1960 at St Thomas’ Church in Caunce Street in the town, before holding their reception at the Imperial Hotel and honeymooning in Edinburgh.

The pair both then went on to play a role in town hall politics, with Sylvia notching up 20 years on the council before stepping down in 2015, while Ivan has served 51 years so far and is Blackpool’s longest standing councillor.

Ivan, who continues to represent Claremont ward for Labour, was Mayor of Blackpool in 2002/3 while Sylvia held the honour 10 years later in 2012/13.

Like many Blackpool couples, they met at a dance at the Winter Gardens.

Sylvia said: “When I met Ivan I didn’t have a clue about politics, but he was very involved and gradually got me into it.

“It has been a big part of our lives, and we were both honoured to be mayors of Blackpool.

“We get on very well and support each other, and we do what we can for the community. We love Blackpool and the people here, it’s a wonderful place to live.”

The couple, who are both 81, have had to postpone a party due to Covid restrictions, but hope to celebrate at some point with family including their grandson Luke and great-grandson Noah.
