The cash is the fourth tranche of money handed out to councils and brings the total the resort has received to £16.2m, although it is also in line for around £8m from the compensation scheme for sales, fees and charges.

Blackpool’s Conservative MPs have both welcomed the latest funding boost.

Blackpool South MP Scott Benton said: “The £4.6m announced today is hugely welcome and will ease financial pressures on Blackpool Council and ensure it is able to continue providing vital local services this winter.”

He added the Government was “keeping its promise to local authorities and ensuring they have the resources they need to continue supporting people.”

The latest assistance is part of a national £900m pot of cash for local authorities and is not ring-fenced, meaning town hall leaders can determine how to spend it to best protect public health, vulnerable people and vital services.

Fylde Council has received an additional £188,000 bringing its total to £1.1m, with Wyre Council getting another £390,000 making its total £1.75m, and Lancashire has had another £11.3m bringing its total to £76.3m.

Paul Maynard, MP for Blackpool North and Cleveleys, said: “I welcome today’s announcement of additional funding for our local councils, to support our local authority teams in their ongoing response to the Covid pandemic and the vital services provided.

“At the same time, I know many individuals and businesses are struggling and more assistance will be needed over the coming months.

“I continue to make the case for targeted packages, to support our tourism and hospitality businesses and other sectors which have been badly impacted by the pandemic and the Government’s response, including arts and events.”
