Mencap is proposing to demolish its existing base on Whitegate Drive and replace it with a new building more suitable to the needs of its members.

Town hall planners approved an application for the scheme using their delegated powers.

The existing premises can accommodate up to 80 members, but currently there is a waiting list and it is hoping the investment will enable the charity to cater for up to 120 members in future.

A design statement which accompanied the application said: “The facility provides a much needed safe environment for vulnerable adults and has proved very popular.

“It is charity run with funding from rental properties in their ownership along with donations which covers the running costs of the facility and the rental maintenance of housing stock. ”

The current building, which is a former Yorkshire Bank, is deemed unsuitable for the future development of the organisation whose work includes holding social gatherings and entertainment for people with learning difficulties.

Planning approval has now been given to replace it with a two storey building with a ground floor function room, built on a slightly bigger footprint. The first floor will be office space, and there will be car parking at the front.

In making their decison, council planners said the “premises provides an important community facility for local adults with learning disabilities and as such is supported.

“The use of some of the first floor as an office within the district centre is also considered acceptable.”
