Politicians go head to head in EU debate

UKIP leader Nigel Farage and Conservative MEP Sajjad Karim will go head-to-head in a live debate in Lytham later this month on what a vote to leave the EU would mean for UK businesses.

The two politicians will be joined by a host of senior business leaders at a Brexit breakfast at Lowther Pavilion on Thursday, April 21.

The event – switched to Lowther from its originally-intended venue of Lytham Green as a long-standing covenant forbids political meetings on The Green – is part of Lytham’s annual St George’s Day Charity Festival, which celebrates all things English, and the debate will take place two months before voters go to the polls on June 23 to decide whether the UK should leave the EU.

The event will run from 8am to 10.15am and will be chaired by the editor of BusinessCloud magazine, Chris Maguire.

Mr Haythornthwaite said: “The Brexit vote is the biggest for a generation and will have huge implications for the UK, Europe and the world.

“St George’s Day Charity Festival is well established in the calendar and we decided it was the perfect platform to stage a proper debate involving politicians and businesses for and against staying in Europe.

“There will be two panels – one in favour of staying in the EU and one against – and the audience will have the chance to hear both arguments and submit questions in advance.
