Police save life of woman who fell from car park roof in Blackpool

Police officers dramatically saved the life of a distressed woman after she fell from a car park roof in Blackpool.

Police clung to the woman to stop her from falling

Fire and police services were called to Church Street just before 2am on Wednesday May 16 after police spotted the woman on top of the BHS car park.

Officers say they arrived to find the woman sat on the edge of the roof and a trained negotiator was brought in to speak the woman.

But as negotiations began, the woman fell over the edge with officers only just managing to grab hold of her to stop her falling to the street below.

Officers were left clinging to the woman while the fire service arrived with specialist equipment.

A police spokesman said: "A concerned family member called us shortly before the incident.

"We located the woman at the car park sat on the edge with her legs over the side.

"She went over the side but thankfully, police officers managed to grab her and hang onto her to stop her falling. They saved her life.

"Five officers were at the scene all helping to keep her safe until the fire service arrived with their Aerial Ladder Platform to assist."

A specialist fire crew equipped with the ALP helped bring the woman to safety.

A spokesman for the fire service said: "We sent a crew to the scene and worked with the police to bring the woman to safety.

"We used our ALP to reach the woman. The swift actions of the police who managed to prevent her from falling and suffering a serious injury."

Police say the woman was uninjured in the incident and was taken to hospital for assessment.
