“Larry’s life was a colourful one, certainly never dull,” said Derek, who lives in Ansdell. “He lived life on the edge regardless of the consequences.

“Up until 1974, prison was no deterrent for Larry – once free he was always on the lookout for the next job.

“The book covers his criminal activities, what his life in prison was really like, how he escaped prison twice, his time on the run and why and how he eventually turned to his true talent as an artist.”

Derek, who spent many years working for Guardian Insurance in Lytham and later took early retirement from its successor Axa, first met Larry in 1974 and they later became brothers-in-law.

“Prior to his death, Larry had started recording his life story onto cassettes,” said Derek. “His immediate family couldn’t bring themselves to listen to the recordings, although for years they talked about doing so.

“I was keen to know what had been recorded, as was the family so with agreement from my sister I started listening to the recordings.

“I then knew his fascinating life story needed to be told.

“I therefore created MP3 files from the recordings and used them to initially to document key facts with the idea that a writer may wish to write his story.

“After documenting two of the recordings I decided I would attempt to write the book myself. Having not written a book before I knew it was going to be a challenge, but I’m pleased with the outcome and I ope people enjoy reading what his life story.”

The book is available from shops and on-line sellers.
