Swimming club adds voice of concern about Fleetwood's YMCA pool

Fleetwood Swimming Club has joined calls for the town’s YMCA pool to stay open as leisure centres across the country feel the squeeze over coronavirus lockdown.

The club has been based at the Fleetwood swimming baths, in The Esplanade, for 46 years and in its time has had some notable swimmers among its ranks, including past and current members involved at Olympic level.

But there is concern that when lockdown ends, only Wyre’s YMCA leisure centres in Thornton and Garstang will open immediately, with the centres at Fleetwood and Poulton, the only ones with pools, ‘under review’.

This has also led to concerns that the pool may not re-open at all.

David Gregson, chairman of Fleetwood Swimming Club, said: “We think it would make more sense to open Fleetwood rather than Thornton because it has an excellent pool, to which people will travel. We have more than 200 members, including young people, and use it six nights a week.”

The club is set to meet Wyre representatives this week.

The YMCA runs all four centres on behalf of Wyre Council, and Wyre has proposed to make over £630,000 of costs in 2020/21 available to help cover revenue losses.
