The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs was called in to examine the dead swans - but the authority still has no idea what may have killed them.

A spokesman for DEFRA said the results of their investigation may be available later in the week.

Five dead swans, one of which appeared to have been deceased for some time, were found in the park last Tuesday. The following day two more dead swans were found, and Blackpool Council picked up yet another two carcasses at an unspecified time.

A further three swans had to be taken away by the RSPCA for treatment after taking ill.
