"Dealing with the passing of a husband and father is difficult as many of you may know and it’s been these acts of kindness that have really helped us get through this as a family. It has just been so lovely of you all.

"Thank you again to all of you that sent flowers and cards, it has touched our hearts and I know it would have meant a lot to Simon too. I haven’t been able to thank everyone in person and hope that people will understand that but give this statement to thank you all.”

Mr Rigby made his millions after selling his stake in Yorkshire-based utilities company, Spice, in 2010.

He went on to found green energy company Farmgen, as well as more than 100 other companies, including The Villa Group, Betsid betting shops, children's nursery chains and a care group.

Mr Rigby took over Preston Guild Hall from the city council in 2014 but it closed its doors in May 2019, and the company behind it went into administration.

In 2017 he was awarded an MBE for services to business in Lancashire and was also named Lancastrian of the Year.
