New Wyre mayor role for Thornton councillor Andrea Kay

Coun Kay, who represents the Pheasants Wood ward, was confirmed for the civic role at a meeting of Wyre's full council last night (November 12).

Councillor Howard Ballard has also been elected as deputy mayor.

They will serve until May 2022, as the usual term has been delayed by the coronavirus pandemic.

Conservative member Coun Kay also serves as a councillor for Cleveleys East, on Lancashire County Council.

Coun Kay told the Gazette: "It's a privilege to take up the role of mayor, it's important because this is an opportunity to promote Wyre both to visitors and people who live here.

"I want to visit all the areas of the borough, meet lots of people and help bring everyone together."

At the meeting, Coun Rita Amos said: “Andrea has previously volunteered to help children and young people from deprived backgrounds in Moss Side, Manchester, to try and improve their lives and did this for 10 years.

"When moving here, she continued to do this.”

“She set up summer classes and helped youngsters with their CVs. She has worked to bring the community together, also setting up the Remembrance Tree for lost relatives in Cleveleys.

“Andrea is also the lead member for children and young people and former Armed Forces champion."

“She also completed a charity parachute jump and yes, she is looking for a new challenge!”

Seconding the motion to elect Counc Kay was Coun Alan Vincent, who commented: “I can assure the residents of Wyre that they will get a tireless champion of the people who will be as enthusiastic as they are in support of the many causes that they hold dear.”

Proposing Councillor Ballard as Deputy Mayor was Coun Paul Moon, who said: “Howard is a co-op pioneer, looking after three charities in the local area. I am sure his fundraising skills will be a great asset to the Mayor.”

Coun Kay has appointed Doherty’s Destiny as her chosen charity for her term as Mayor.

Doherty’s Destiny visit schools and other youth based settings to raise awareness of bullying causing mental health issues in young people.

The charity was set up by Joanne Hargreaves-Doherty, after her son James tragically took his own life following bullying on social media. James was just 16 years old.

Coun Kay also intends to support ‘Men’s Sheds’ and Armed Forces Breakfast Clubs during her time as Mayor.
