Wyre Council, which owns the park, is to consider approval of the first of two phases of a scheme to refurbish the amenity.

Although the Grade II listed Memorial Park was awarded £2.4 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund in 2016, to restore areas of the park for the community, the play area was not part of that project and has fallen into relative disrepair.

But that looks set to change, thanks largely to the Friends of the Memorial Park, who have championed the refurbishment of the playground and actively raised funds and successfully bid for a grant towards the project.

At a portfolio holders' meeting at Wyre Civic Centre on Thursday October 29, a decision is expected to be made for formal approval of the project.

The council would make use a grant of £29,500 secured by the Friends from the Lancashire Environment Fund, plus a donation of £4,212 from the Friends and an additional £2,788 from Wyre's own unallocated playground refurbishment budget in the 2020/21 Capital Programme.

This first phase of the project has a total cost of £36,500 and will see the replacement of the exisiting climbing frame, and replacement of the existing playground roundabout with an 'inclusive' roundabout suitable for all abilities.

Wyre Council would be designated the accountable body for the £29,500 grant if the project gets the official green light.

Les Fletcher, chairman of the Friends of the Memorial Park, said; "We're hopeful that the project will be approved by the council.

"We've all worked hard to get this far with the project and have been well supported by members of the community in Fleetwood."

Not details have yet been revealed about the proposed second phase of the project.
