I'm bringing some Blackpool spirit to the Big Smoke

One of Blackpool’s greatest landmarks is set to feature in one of the world’s biggest road races.

Inspirational fundraiser Tony Howarth, 67, will yet again don his towering Blackpool Tower costume to take on the London Marathon, bringing a bit of seaside spirit to the Big Smoke.

Seasoned charity champ Tony, from Lytham, has raised tens of thousands of pounds for charity over the years and will once again be running in aid of Samaritans.

Tony is limbering up to take on the world’s greatest marathon once again this year, on Sunday, April 26.

But that’s just the warm-up.

This year he’s also tackling a marathon on Everest, Ironman Wales, and the Ultra X Max – 330km (that’s 205 miles) of brutal South African terrain.

Speaking about his inspiration, Tony said: “To raise funds and awareness for Samaritans, who provide someone to talk to, without judgement, 24/7.

“My suffering is strictly race-limited. For many living with mental or physical illness, it isn’t.”

He added: “Many people find it hard to speak openly or ask for help, but talking can be life-saving – whether it's with a colleague, family member, friend or helpline like Samaritans.

“Every 10 seconds, Samaritans volunteers respond to a call for help. Samaritans are available, for free, 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, to listen and support people with whatever they are facing, with no judgement.

“It’s only your kind donations and 23,000 listening volunteers that ensure Samaritans can always be there for anyone struggling to cope.”

Tony has so far raised more than £2,000 in sponsorship for the London Marathon. You can donate here: https://www.justgiving.com/page/tony-howarth-8?newPage=true
