Gary, 46, of Highgate, had heart valve replacement surgery in 2017 following a car accident on his way home from triathlon training.

Eager to test his limits after his rehabilitation, he decided to take on the challenge of running a marathon for his local NHS charity, Blue Skies Hospitals Fund.

Running the famous marathon was a lifelong dream of Gary's, and he was also keen to prove a point to encourage others who have undergone heart surgery.

On Sunday he did just that, completing the 26 mile marathon course from Fleetwood to Starr Gate and back, with the traditional London setting being changed because of the coronavirus pandemic.

He said: “I ran the marathon for a few reasons: to raise money for Blue Skies and thank the hospital for their hard work and dedication, to prove that anything is possible after heart surgery, and because I’m slightly mad!

"If felt great to get through it and achieve my aim.

"Fortunately the weather was kind, so that helped."

Not only was he supported by his friends and family in his bubble, but his employers, GAP Hire Solutions, are match-funding his donations.

Gary has been supported by wife Nicola, who helped him get his fitness back after the surgery, and Max the dog.

After finishing the marathon, cheered on by onlookers, Gary and his fellow runners popped into the North Euston Hotel for some well-earned drinks, with the hotel setting aside a special, socially-distanced area for them.

Gary added: "I just want to thank the North Euston for making us so welcome and everyone for supporting us."

Gary has raised £600 so far and with GAP match-funding the final total, the amount raised will be at least £1,200,
