Each year the free event plays host to the suppliers of quality fair including cheeses, chutneys, meats and cakes and delicious ciders and ales and coffees, plus hot food stalls and cooking demonstrations.

It was hoped that this year's event could go ahead as usual and that the coronavirus pandemic might have subsided by late summer.

But organisers from Wyre Council have now confirmed that the event will not be able to go ahead in its usual format.

However, an alternative version, using social median platforms, will still go ahead on the same weekend as the original date.

A spokesman for the event said: "It is with a heavy heart that we have decided to cancel the Fylde Coast Food & Drink Festival 2020 which was due to take place at Marine Hall this August.

"COVID-19 has left us with no other option. The safety and wellbeing of our customers, traders and staff has to come first.

"However, the festival is going ahead in a different way this year."

The Fylde Coast Virtual Food Festival will take place over the weekend of August 15 and 16, between 10am and 4pm each day, showcasing some of our traders through videos, links and demos.

The organisers will be making use Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to promote and stage the event.

It is expected that the festival will be back in its usual format in 2021.
