Fleetwood Carnival going 'virtual' this year for first time

Fleetwood Carnival may have been cancelled this year but organisers still wanted to do something for families in the town - so the event has gone 'virtual'.

The carnival, which has been held in the town for at least 120 years, was due to be staged on Saturday June 20.

But in March the committee reluctantly cancelled it because of the coronavirus pandemic.

However, the coordinators knew all the youngsters and their parents would be disappointed at missing out on the fun this year.

So they are asking families to dress up bikes or prams, create fancy dress costumes for children and adults - and then send the pictures to the committee.

On Saturday June 20 - the day the carnival would have been held - the pictures will go up on the Fleetwood Carnival facebook page and prizes will be awarded for those judged to be the best.

There is also a plan to create a special video which will go up on the site on the day.

The organisers of the 'Virtual Fleetwood Carnival 2020' are calling for participants to send in the pictures from now on until next week, with the deadline being the evening of next Thursday, June 18.

Carnival chairman, Cheryl Walkington, said: "The carnival is so good at bringing everyone together so it has been really disappointing this year.

"My mum loved it when she was young, it was part of her childhood and she used to look forward to it so much, and so did I.

"So we decided to at least try something this year, give the kids something to take part in.
