England and Blackpool football star Paul Stewart reveals death of his Blackpool wife Bev at 56

Former England and Blackpool star Paul Stewart has confirmed that his wife Bev has died aged 56.

The 55-year-old broke the news on Twitter and wrote that he "cannot describe the pain" of losing his wife and mother to their three children.

The couple had been married 33 years and they first met in Bev's hometown of Blackpool where Paul was starting out his football career.

He said on Twitter: "I can not describe the pain, I love you and will always love you Bev."

Bev was strongly supportive of her husband following his decision to help sex abuse victims after revealing his own four-year ordeal as a teenager.

Paul, who played for Manchester City, Liverpool, Tottenham Hotspur and Sunderland during the 1980s and 90s, came forward after two former Crewe players revealed they were also abused as youngsters

In 2016, Bev spoke about her husband's courage in agreeing to be named.

She said: "I do think it is the right thing to do. I can still walk out there with my head held high because he is so very brave.

'We have our two young girls and my son, and all the members of my family feel very proud of him."

Former teammates including Gary Lineker, Paul Lake and Graham Roberts sent messages of condolence to Paul on Twitter.
