Abigail, eight, and Teigan McKone, five, of Kingsmeade, have never had a proper hair cut before.

They will be braving the big chop this month in aid of the Little Princess Trust, which creates wigs for children with cancer who have lost their own hair while undergoing chemotherapy.

Their mum Natasha, 32, said: “They both have incredibly long and thick hair. Before lockdown they used to go swimming and I thought it would be worth having a good cut, and I asked them if they would want to donate it.

“When I explained how it helped children that are poorly she said OK.”

The sisters, who are both pupils at Hawes Side Academy, were supposed to donate their hair back in May, but had to postpone their plans due to lockdown.

Since then, their hair has grown even longer, with Abigail boasting more than 18 inches of golden hair, while Teigan’s measures an impressive 16 inches.

Their kind donation has a special meaning for their mum, as she lost her childhood best friend, Chanelle, to cancer.

She said: “It’s all to help other children who, due to their illness, haven’t got hair - and my girls have got so much of it. For girls, their hair is an important part of their appearance. Some of them hide themselves away because they haven’t got their hair any more.”

Abigail said: “It’s a really nice thing to do and I have got really long hair. I can always grow it back, so it will all be OK.”
