The closure, between New Bonny Street and York Street, will be put in place on Monday and will remain until March 26. The road will be managed by two-way traffic signals either side of Chapel Street junction throughout this time.

The west end of Chapel Street will be closed and a diversion will be in place. Drivers will not be able to turn out of Chapel Street onto the Promenade.

A Blackpool Council spokesman said: "Due to the subway being abandoned many years ago, it is in a poor condition and in a dilapidated state. Repair and ongoing maintenance would be at a significant cost, so the subway will be decommissioned by infilling with light weight foam concrete. This will eliminate any ongoing maintenance costs for the council and increase the safety of the roads by increasing the loading capacity of Chapel Street and the Promenade to 40/44 tonnes for future users."

The cost of filling in the abandoned subway will be covered by a £900,000 fund from the Department of Transport.
