Big turn-out for first pet blessing ceremony at Freedom Centre church in Mereside, Blackpool

There were pets of all sizes when a community church in Blackpool held a special pet blessing ceremony – and there was even room for Olaf the snowman!

The Freedom Church on Langdale Road, Mereside, invited residents on the estate to the first ever pet blessing ceremony at the church, which includes its own community centre and social hub.

And the ceremony, on Saturday October 15, was certainly well attended.

Pets are no strangers to the church, as they are welcome to services and some even accompany their owners during Holy Communion, but this was the first pet blessing ceremony at the church.

Rev Linda Tomkinson, who performed the blessings and who founded the church more than six years ago, said: “This blessing was an opportunity for us to thank God for creating our wonderful pets and allowing us to have them in our lives.

"I will be leaving the church in a few months for a new ministry in Preston, so I wanted to do this blessing before I left.

"I was delighted with the turn-out.”

The pets were mainly dogs, but one parishioner brought along their beloved soft toy of Olaf the snowman from the musical Frozen.

However, this event melted everyone’s heart in the church!
