Wyre Council carried out work two weeks ago on land surrounding the children's play area on Farnham Way, Carleton, in a bid to prevent flooding issues.

Two 'pond sized' holes were dug into the ground to provide extra drainage, but recent heavy rainfall caused them to fill up with water and flood the surrounding path.

Residents of neighbouring properties were outraged by the work, and worried about their properties, gardens and children's safety.

Irene Thompson, 68, lives on Canterbury Close and said after asking the council for a resolution to flooding in the area for years, the work had proved disastrous.

"Any children falling into these holes filled with water could drown, there have been no safety measures put in place," she said.

"The park is used every day by school children, dog walkers and elderly people on the estate.

"We've had problems with flooding every year and this was supposed to be the council's solution, but after only one day of rain the holes are full of water.

"People are already throwing rubbish in, and something needs to be done before someone has an accident."

James Baldwin, 62 and partner Sandra Parker, 71, were also furious with the drainage systems put into the park next to their house on Buckingham Way.

Sandra, who is retired, and James, a bus driver for Blackpool Transport, were concerned about the safety of the holes as colder weather approaches.

Sandra said: "We've complained about flooding so they did this work, and it's absolutely disgraceful.

"Everyone around here uses that path, and if it floods and freezes over in winter we're in a right mess then, aren't we?"

Donna Moylan, 62, lives on Farnham Way directly behind the affected land, and was worried about them filling up with water and flooding her garden.

She said: "I'm really hoping they don't cause flooding to the back of our house, we have too much to lose.

"I have MS, but I do try to walk around the area to keep myself motivated, and it's such a mess now.

"If anyone was to walk around there at night and fall in, nobody would know. It's just not safe at all."

In response to the complaints, a spokesman for Wyre Council said: "The work has been undertaken to try and prevent the continual flooding on the footpaths and manage the water through sustainable drainage systems, utilising the basins created to capture and control the slow drainage of the water through a natural process on site.

"We are aware of this issue and concerns by local residents. The higher than average rainfall this weekend caused the basins to fill more than projected.

"We are reviewing the scheme with the architect."
