91. Dame Thora Hird
he actress, comedian, presenter and writer enjoyed a career spanning over 70 years in which she appeared in more than 100 film and television roles, becoming a household name and a British institution. Thora was born in Morecambe and her family background was largely theatrical. Her mother had been an actress, while her father managed a number of entertainment venues in Morecambe, including the Royalty Theatre, where Thora made her first appearance, and the West End Pier. 93. Sir Peter J Radcliffe
Sir Peter John Ratcliffe, born in Morecambe on May 14 1954, is a British Nobel Laureate physician-scientist who is trained as a nephrologist (doctor in renal medicine). He attended Lancaster Royal Grammar School from 1965 to 1972. He won an open scholarship to Gonville and Caius College, Cambridge, in 1972 to study medicine at the University of Cambridge. Ratcliffe is best known for his work on cellular reactions to hypoxia, for which he shared the 2019 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with William Kaelin Jr and Gregg L Semenza.
