Behave stupidly and you don’t get rescued
StormStorm

Given the current atrocious weather conditions the behaviour of some people defies belief.

A surfboarder has had to be rescued when he was swept off his board in high seas. Conditions were so severe that the lifeboat that went to his rescue very nearly capsized. Five people, all volunteers, nearly lost their lives going to aid a very foolish and irresponsible man.

Four people were rescued on Ben Nevis the other day. They were wearing trainers. None had any proper climbing equipment or a compass or winter weather clothing. The rescue team said they were very lucky to be alive.

Again brave people who, like lifeboat crews, get very little recognition or praise, risked their lives to save people who are bereft of common sense.

It is high time that we adopted the policy of some other countries which warn people who stupidly behave in the above manner that they will not be rescued by official bodies.

New challenge in aid of pets

With many of our New Year resolutions a distant memory, now could be a good time to set a new challenge for the year ahead, to help you get back on track. And at vet charity PDSA, we’re urging keen cyclists to take on the Prudential RideLondon. The 100-mile cycling challenge around London and Surrey provides a perfect opportunity to help kick-start a year of health and fitness, and raise funds for sick and injured pets.

PDSA is the UK’s leading veterinary charity, and by signing up to the cycling challenge, fundraisers will be able to make a difference to the lives of thousands of pets and their owners. When owners have nowhere else to turn, PDSA is there. But it costs £60 million every year to provide our vital lifeline and we’re asking cyclists to help us continue our life-saving work.

For cyclists who have secured their own place, we would be delighted for you to join Team PDSA on 16 August 2020 to help us raise awareness of the life-saving work our vets and nurses undertake every day.

We also have a limited number of charity places available, where you will receive fantastic support for your epic challenge!

For anyone interested in cycling RideLondon for PDSA and helping us continue to treat pets and change lives please go to www.pdsa.org.uk/prudential-ride.

On behalf of poorly pets, thank you.

ENVIRONMENT

Dredge rivers and waterways

Once again many acres of land and homes are flooded due to high rainfall and yet the river authorities can’t grasp that much of it is due to rivers and waterways not being dredged. Years ago, there was a team which continually spent time on the maintenance of our streams and rivers. In the name of saving money and protecting wildlife, human beings and their properties are being put at risk.

Just why don’t these pen-pushers get their act together and take action before the catastrophes happen instead of making excuses and promising to do better before the next deluge falls on us?

CRIME

Expensive failure of commissioners

When crime commissioners were created, the public at last thought there was somebody to challenge the police on their behalf.

What an expensive bureaucratic failure it has been. They are occasionally seen on TV saying nothing of any substance or consequence.

In the meantime, the public’s trust in the police has rapidly diminished.

When car thefts and burglaries have been demoted to minor status, is it any wonder?

When ratepayers see a uniformed officer on the beat they think it is their lucky day.
