Mask rebels leading us into lockdowns

Driving through Lytham and St Annes town centres last Sunday, we were horrified to see the high number of visitors who weren’t wearing face masks.

It was a case of spotting someone who was wearing a face mask! Shame on you visitors to Lytham and St Annes!

The constant messaging put out by Government clearly has not got through to the residents and visitors of these two Lancashire seaside resorts.

Police and the local authorities are relying on people to use ‘common sense’ and voluntarily wear face masks, which is happening in other towns I have visited.

There is no wonder that there are local lockdowns 20 miles inland in Blackburn and Darwen.

My conclusion, from my visit to Lytham, is that Lancashire – and other areas in the north west – will be in lockdown sooner rather than later.

No soundbites. Just do your job please

As a teacher and dad of three, I am used to my opinions falling on deaf ears.

Yet following the coverage of the latest shambles in Covid testing, I can’t resist giving some simple advice to hapless Boris Johnson and Matt Hancock – stop wasting time using meaningless soundbites; we neither want nor need your moon-shots, Whack-A-Moles or world-leadings. Just do your jobs with industry and integrity.

If that is too much to ask (and I fear it is), resign now, and let others far more worthy of our trust, get on with the crucial task of protecting us all.

PM in wrong job at the wrong time

It occurs to me that our current Prime Minister is in the wrong job at the wrong time and is designed to be our leader in happier times.

My feeling is that has something of the ‘paper man’ in a gale of wind about him. He seems to have an aversion to bad news (understandably) and casts around to find something up beat to do or say.

I must admit that I have had reservations about Boris Johnson since before the last election after I read an article by Michael Gove complaining of how difficult it had been to persuade Mr Johnson to get on with preparation for various scenarios which they might encounter during the referendum period.

According to Mr Gove, Johnson was extremely difficult to pin down to ensure he was ready to face the public during debates. In other words, he seemed to think he could deal with any problems ‘on the hoof’. Not appropriate in the current circumstances.

Someone should be in control

I’d like to say the worst thing we have to worry about is not coronavirus, but the selfish people who are thinking about themselves, not anybody else.

I mention my local Asda who appear to let people into supermarkets who are not wearing a mask.

The law is there and there should be someone keeping control. I’m glad I have lived through the best years when people were well mannered and friendly.

We had it hard, but we did not carry on like the minority of today.

BBC stars? We live in an unfair society

Being over 85, I received, on Wednesday, details of how to pay my TV licence at a time when most of us old codgers have only TV for company with the virus about, and today our papers show the unbelievable salaries paid to so-called disc jockeys and other highly paid so-called stars. Even Gary Lineker has accepted a cut. What about the rest?

No one seems to have done anything for us pensioners – and all our protest signatures.

We certainly live in an unfair society.
