Why build housing on flood plains?

Now that the Covid vaccination rollout is successfully underway and Brexit completed, I wonder if the Government is going to re-focus business on other national imperatives such as planning?

Having responded to the two consultation documents last year, namely Planning for the Future and Changes to the Current Planning System, I hope that they will look at the scandal of the large number of homes being built in flood risk areas on flood plains.

The effects of climate change are escalating. In the North, as was predicted, we are having wetter winters, and flooding events are becoming more and more frequent.

It is therefore surprising that councils seem hell-bent on approving the building of houses on the flood plain.

It is clear something is seriously wrong. Too many councils are paying lip service to climate change, but we must make a stand against the ludicrous destruction of flood plains.

Response

The Nazis were already here...

I have enjoyed the to and fro between two of your correspondents recently, regarding their disagreement on whether Hitler would, or intended to invade these Isles.

Both gave good reasons to support their case.

Having been here, just, during this time, I remain very thankful that he didn’t. Not expressly in the thought that we would have been incapable of defending these isles , but I was brought up on great British public standing solidly together, ‘Keep Calm And Carry On’ being the order of the day.

But was it really like that ?

Having little regard for the so-called ‘great and good’ of this country , I have in my own way done as much research on these times, and the results are disturbing.

There were so many pro-fascist organisations , The Right Club, White Nights , Nordic League etc.

We, as young people knew of Oswald Mosely (pictured) but nothing of these others, who all seem to be our ‘betters’.

The last book I have read is Hitler’s British Traitors, and it’s an eye-opener. It shows how unfair our system was, and possibly still is. Aristocratic British pro-Nazis collaborators were more or less protected.

I recommend Tim Tates’ book. He tells it so well.

Arms trade

Time to ban police arms fair

Congratulations to the Campaign against the Arms Trade for being nominated for the Nobel Peace prize for its ongoing work to stop Britain’s complicity in bombing Yemen.

This march, the Home Office will host its annual Security and Policing arms fair.

It is a secretive event that brings many of the biggest arms companies together with many attending by international delegations from many countries, all of which have police forces with very poor human rights record.

Although this year’s event different, taking place online, prospective buyers will see all the usual equipment that will kill all over the world. Small arms, anti-protest weaponry and spyware will all help to apply state violence and for repression.

It is not just policing and conventional weapons that the event focuses on. It is also militarising borders with the kind of equipment that has enabled the hostile environment with anti-migrant policies that have been enforced in the UK and around the world.

It’s time now to shut down the arms industry in all its forms.

While events like Security and Policing arms fair are taking place let our MPs know how we feel about it.
