Tories supporting us through this pandemic

I must take issue with some of the false claims made by Royston Jones about the Conservatives and the NHS (Your Say, April 8, 21)

The NHS isn’t relying on charity it receives plenty of funding from the government. Funding hasn’t been cut to the bone, NHS funding had actually increased year on year.

There are absolutely no plans to privatise the NHS and I don’t know why these blatantly false claims are persistently peddled.

Also it is false to claim the government cheered blocking a pay rise for nurses. I’m a nurse well remunerated for my job. This was simply a lip service Labour amendment to try and derail the Queen’s speech.

The Conservatives are not operating in any moral vacuum. They are supporting the country through this pandemic and I’m grateful to have strong leadership from Boris Johnson and his team.

The Conservatives are not playing at being friends, we are supporting the NHS while Labour and its supporters shamefully treat it as a political football.

So much good done by elderly

Why are so many elderly people dying in care homes?

The NHS are doing a fantastic job looking after patients with coronavirus. Care and nursing home staff need more protective equipment, they are working so hard caring for elderly people.

I am very concerned about the many elderly people dying in care homes.

I would like to point out I have read and experienced over the years the good work of elderly/older people.

Society would grind to a halt if it were not for them. They save the Government a lot of money. They look after children, collect them from school and some are carers themselves.

There is a wide range of unpaid voluntary jobs they carry out, too many to list.

They can be drivers, work in hospitals, help the police, visit victims of crime, and first aid work. They provide guides for stately homes, museums and clubs. They take part in many community groups.

Even physically challenged people work voluntarily in telephone duties, reading to patients etc.

They all bring with them a lifetime of skills.

I read society is so independent that simply cutting out one group such as elderly people has a knock on negative impact on its smooth running.

More fines in Lancashire

Sadly I read in the national press that more people are continuing to be fined in Lancashire for allegedly flouting Covid-19 lock-down restrictions that in any other police authority.

We have had 380 handed out, ahead of a mere 219 in Thames Valley and 205 in Surrey, according to figures from the National Police Chiefs Council(NPCC).

Given that our police chief admits that there has been confusion all around,I think that this is a great pity.

We must focus on social care

Out of all the issues thrown up by coronavirus, one that needs to be dealt with urgently is social care. Too long has it been the Cinderella and, with or without the long overdue Green Paper, there can be no further head-in-the-sand excuses at the highest level.

It is a shameful reflection on successive governments that it has taken a pandemic to force those concerned to focus on the real issues: human life and carers’ welfare with fair reward.

The donations to the marathon walking of Captain Tom Moore (pictured) shows there is recognition across the population of the financial shortfall and a willingness to contribute a fair and acceptable amount.
