Hosepipe ban should be tougher - and start today!

We recently had what you would call a bit of rain, a few hours of minimal rain in fact. Remember it? and now we all think there is plenty of water again... wrong.

It will take a deluge of a constant four weeks, in the higher ground to get anywhere near normal reservoir levels.

I understand 25 per cent of water is wasted due to broken pipes etc by United Utilities, which we all agree is not acceptable, but that is no excuse to disregard any requests from them, to save water supplies.

Why then have United Utilities only now decided to impose a hosepipe ban to commence on August 5?

I drive along Dickson Road, Talbot Road, Ansdell Road, Common Edge Road and so on and see car wash businesses using gallons of water a day without restrictions, I wonder if they are on a meter as I am, paying for what you use.

That should become compulsory and will sort the problem out overnight.

We are completely mad in this country, why pussyfoot about, this ban should have been implemented on July 1.

They employ meteorologists on fat cat salaries to predict rain fall.

UU say customers “may” get a fine of up to £1,000 it should be “will” and it’s up to UU to set up a dedicated report line so offenders can be reported.

If that’s been catered for I will be astounded.

So next time we get a ‘shower of rain’ turn on your favourite music and go outside and have a good old sing song Gene Kelly style.
