Home Secretary Theresa May launches her Conservative leadership campaign at RUSI in London, as she formally enters the race to succeed David Cameron in Downing Street

It is now clear, as some of us argued months ago, that Brexit will damage economic growth and tax revenues. Deficit spending is now inevitable.

What is required is a Prime Minister who is a pragmatist with steel in the spine.

Theresa May has those qualities in abundance.

Given Andrea Leadsom’s 25 years working in finance in the City, her performance in the TV debates plus her patriotism and free-market politics, the energy minister would make an ideal partner for May. It is extremely important that the vacuum in British politics is ended, and soon, because of huge international concern.

That is why the Home Secretary, who has very strong support in the parliamentary party, should be installed as leader without a vote. This would end the uncertainty which would be very bad for the nation.

We fought through once, and will again

It seems all is doom and gloom, we stand alone, as we did in 1940.

Can we expect the same severe austerity? Ration books may be issued, petrol rationing to ensue, possible power cuts. I remember walking to school gas mask in little cardboard box hanging round my neck, sat on my mother’s knee in the coal cellar, listening to the thuds and bangs o droning aircraft.

But rationing food could be a good thing, for curing obesity. Petrol rationing as well could empty the supermarket car park, heralding the return of the corner shop and non-congested roads. We still won through and will do so again.

Battlefield tours to commemorate dead

Each year, the Kings Own Yorkshire Light Infantry organise pilgrimages to the battle areas of the First World War. The tour is from September 22 to 26 and seats are still available.

The trips specialise in visiting specific cemeteries and a battlefield guide will accompany each trip. The trips are open to anyone interested. Please send an SAE for all postal replies.

Great fun, and all in aid of a good cause

I would like to say what a great afternoon it was on July 3 at the Bollywood/English tea garden party arranged by Hazel Critchley in her own garden, in aid of Alzheimers.

She made £500 by inviting friends, family and colleagues.

Her friends from Bollywood dancing provided the entertainment and everyone joined in, it was great fun.
