New plans for Prom site set for approval

A revised £12m scheme to demolish a derelict care home and replace it with apartments has been earmarked for approval when it goes before planners next week.

The application for the site of the former Abbeydale Care Home on Harrow Place, South Promenade, has seen the number of flats reduced from 113 to 86, meaning the height of the building would rise to six storeys instead of eight.

A residential parking scheme is also proposed which would deliver one parking space per apartment.

Blackpool Council’s planning committee is being recommended to approve the application in principle but delegate the final decision to the head of planning pending agreement on the parking scheme.

A report to the committee, which will meet on Tuesday, says: “This proposal is seeking to regenerate some disused care homes with a bold modern building which pays homage to the Crescent to which it would be attached.

“At the same time it seeks to respect the setting of the building by stepping down from a focal point on the corner to the Crescent to the south, and houses to the east.”

Councillors deferred the scheme in May after concerns were raised by neighbours about the height of the proposed development and the parking.

The consortium behind the project, led by hotelier Tony Banks, withdrew the application but following talks it was resubmitted.
