The awards, signifying quality in public open spaces, are given after inspectors examine general maintenance and management, recent improvements, community involvement and plans for the future.

This year they were given to Lowther Gardens, Lytham; Fairhaven Lake and Gardens; Ashton Gardens, St Annes; Memorial Gardens, Lytham and Promenade Gardens, St Annes

The new addition is Elswick Village Hall and Gardens, which is jointly maintained by the authority and Elswick Parish Council.

Coun Sue Fazackerley, Fylde Council cabinet member for leisure and culture, said: “It’s not long ago that the area had just two Green Flags. I’m really pleased that we now have six and congratulations are due to Elswick which is the first parish to have gained the award.

Volunteers in the parks as well as council staff can take credit for these fine achievements: many improvements would not have taken place without their involvement.

“Some councils have been entering fewer parks for these awards but we intend to maintain and improve our standards.

“We see the huge benefits to residents and visitors in being able to relax and enjoy our beautiful green spaces.”
