She was held after paramedics found the body of a 74-year-old man – believed to be her partner – in a flat in Braithwaite Street, North Shore, shortly after 10pm on Sunday.

A post-mortem examination to find out exactly how the pensioner died ‘may take place today’, a spokeswoman for Lancashire Police said.

Detectives are treating the death as unexplained and have been speaking to the man’s neighbours.

Claire Wilkes, who lives opposite the corner block of flats and saw forensic specialists descend on the street, close to Dickson Road, said: “I’m completely surprised.

“I didn’t expect it to be so serious.”

Jane Dillon, 28, from Overdale Grove in Grange Park, was visiting a friend in nearby Bute Avenue when she saw police outside the flat on Monday.

She said: “We saw a private ambulance turn up. That was at around 11am when Jeremy Kyle was on.

“We saw the body being brought out in a bodybag.”
