Mock opening to mark hotel's 175 anniversary

The Grade II-listed seafront hotel, which opened with something of a fanfare in 1841, was designed by noted architect Decimus Burton and is arguably one of the North West’s most elegant hotels from the period.

On Good Friday, March 25, the hotel will be officially “re-opened” in a ceremony involving the Mayor and Mayoress of Wyre, a town crier and Fleetwood Old Boys Band.

Then, during the course of the Easter weekend, there will be a series of big band, folk and rock music events to mark the milestone.

And in addition to that there will also be an exhibition of vintage photographs relating to the hotel’s history.

Fleetwood residents can help by bringing in copies of old bills or photographs which can be used in the exhibition. North Euston manager Stephen Dale said: “The North Euston is one of the main buildings in Fleetwood, historically and architecturally.

“But it is still very much at the heart of this community.

“A great many Fleetwood organisations regularly meet here and some important events still take place here.

“We’re hoping residents can join in and help us celebrate this milestone, which we’re very proud of.”

Stephen has been liaising with local historians and Fleetwood Civic Society to find out more about the hotel, bought in 2010 by experienced hoteliers Paul and Fiona Spearman.

It is well documented that in the 1840s, the hotel was a stopping off place for railway passengers heading up to Scotland from down south. Victorian travellers would set off from London’s Euston Station by steam train, and disembark at Fleetwood, staying overnight at the North Euston.
