Mobile banking site raises some security fears

Following the planned closure of Lloyds in High Street, the bank has proposed mobile branches to offer essential services.

But Garstang Councillor Lady Atkins fears the travelling unit may be hi-jacked on route.

She said: “I do think these mobile branches are a good idea - hopefully they could travel to some of the smaller villages and it will certainly help people that don’t bank online.

“Would these units be allowed to have much cash in them? You hear of gangs raiding cash points - they could hi-jack the unit.

“Security needs to be properly thought out.”

Coun Atkins added it was a “shame” the bank was closing, as it drives more custom to the town.

She said: “Banks are the mainstay of village small-town life. It brings the customers. I do understand that more people are banking online. I certainly do, but I also go to banks too. It is just like the post offices - if you don’t use them you face losing them.

“It is a worry what businesses will do when they need to cash in their takings - will they now have to make arrangements with other banks.

“Luckily we still have the Bank of Scotland and Barclays in town.”

Lloyds Bank announced it would close 100 branches across the UK last month, with the Garstang site to shut on September 18.

A spokesman said: “Security measures on our mobile branches are comparable with that at any of our standard high street branches.

“This new mobile branch will provide a vital service to the local communities it visits, by giving customers access to everyday banking services such as making deposits, withdrawing cash and paying bills.

“Our mobile branch colleagues will also be on hand to help customers. Servicing hours will depend on anticipated local demand. Full details of the mobile branch service will be confirmed in advance of the new service becoming operational.”
