Marley is star of poppy knit WW1 project

A nine-year-old schoolboy has become the first child to join a hospital campaign to honour the lives of those who served in the First World War.

Marley Booth, from Poulton, is backing Blackpool Victoria Hospital’s ‘Great BTH Knit’ which aims to knit or crochet 30,000 individual poppies to donate to an art project to mark the 100th anniversary of the war.

Marley, who is a pupil at Breck Primary School, said: “I overheard my mum mentioning something about making poppies after she saw a post on Facebook.

“My grandma Barbara showed me how to knit and my grandma Pip showed me how to sew the petals together and put on the buttons in the middle.

“It was fiddly at first, but I’m happy with how they turned out.”

He was given wool by Unison representatives at Blackpool Victoria Hospital.

Unison learning representative Jane Eyre, 
who helps fund knit and natter sessions at Blackpool Victoria and Clifton Hospitals, said: “It was lovely to meet Marley and great to see the younger generation learning to knit and get involved in such a great cause. He should be an inspiration to his peers.”
