Marie leads call for more cancer charity volunteers

The charity is hoping to get more people than ever wearing its famous daffodil pin during its annual fundraiser this month.

And it needs volunteers to help sell the badges.

The money raised will help Marie Curie Nurses tend tp people living with a terminal illness, providing them with vital one-to-one nursing care and support in their own homes.

Marie Smith, a Marie Curie supporter in Blackpool, gives to the charity because their nurses helped her family when her mum was diagnosed with a terminal illness.

She said: “When I first found out my mum was terminally ill, it felt like a ticking time bomb and my brother and I felt overwhelmed with fear, upset and anxiety.

“I left my job to be my mum’s full time carer at home.

“As a TV Producer, I know what hard work is, but nobody could ever have prepared me for how hard it would be to care for your poorly mum.

“Then one day there was a glimmer of hope given to us when one of my mum’s district nurses told me about the Marie Curie nurses and the service available to us. I was so grateful.”

The charity particularly needs help at Morrisons in South Shore tomorrow, Friday and Saturday and Blackpool Street Collection on March 10.

Ms Smith added: “To know that someone else would be there overnight was such a relief, nights were the hardest time with mum as she often woke breathless and panicky which was very frightening to say the least.

“The lovely nurses put us completely at ease and I knew mum was in good hands.

“Their calm and caring manner was just what we needed.”
