Man died after fall from top of car park roof

A man killed himself in a fall from the top of a car park after running away from an escorted trip from The Harbour.

Adam Carter, 36, from Thornton Gate, Cleveleys, died after falling from the fifth floor of the Talbot Road car park in Blackpool on September 10 2017.

At his inquest at Blackpool Town Hall last week, a jury heard how he was being treated for bipolar affective disorder at The Harbour mental health hospital at the time of his death.

He had been suffering from ‘mania’, but this was believed to be under control as of August 2017 and he was responding to treatment.

However, while on escorted leave from the hospital on the day he died, it is believed he absconded to Church Street, where he identified himself as a Harbour patient to a passer-by, and asked them to call an ambulance at around 5.45pm.

He then made his way to the fifth floor of the car park, where he fell.

He was taken to Blackpool Victoria Hospital, where he died of multiple injuries due to the impact of the fall. His death was recorded at 7.03pm.

His inquest handed down a conclusion of suicide on Wednesday.

In his report, Coroner Alan Wilson wrote: “Prior to absconding, Adam appeared settled and there was no evidence to suggest Adam would abscond.

“He had previously been on nine periods of escorted leave without incident, and he had not expressed any self harm or suicidal ideation at that period.

“We conclude that alcohol and substance abuse played no causal role in his death or the events leading to it.”
