Proposals to build a single storey extension to form a sports bar at Ma Kelly’s Showboat on Queens Promenade have been recommended for approval when they go before town hall planners tomorrow.

The chain took over the venue, formerly Uncle Tom’s Cabin, last summer.

But since then, the operators of the neighbouring Elgin Hotel claim there have been a number of noise-related incidents, which they fear will increase if the extension is allowed.

A letter of objection from the hotel warns: “The idea that the sports bar (which I understand has a licence until 3am) should have its entrance/exit within four metres of our boundary wall quite frankly fills me with horror.”

The statement from the Elgin says it has had a number of complaints from its guests about noise due to Ma Kelly’s customers leaving the premises late at night, and sometimes getting caught up in altercations.

But council planners say conditions would be imposed to control noise.

A report to the planning committee says: “The applicants have submitted a noise assessment, as requested, and it is considered that the satisfactory sound insulation of the extension can be achieved via conditions.”

It adds: “Other matters arising from consultation comments relating to security, design of the extension, noise and ventilation have also been taken on board by the applicants.”

Conditions could include limiting use of the front door into the extension by customers until 9pm.

A noise assessment report carried out on behalf of Ma Kelly’s says the extension can be built “to prevent any significant adverse impact on the neighbouring property.”
