Traffic monitors are reporting ‘severe delays’ of 75 minutes and eight miles of congestion on the northbound M6 between the top of the M55 at junctions 32 of the M6 and Junction 33 at Lancaster South and Garstang). Delays are also reported affecting the southbound carriageway with motorists warned they face delays of around 30 minutes and two miles of congestion.

The average speed is said to be around 15mph on the affected stretch of motorway.

National Highways say the delays are due to roadworks, with lane 3 closed in both directions. And the agency has warned that the works are scheduled to continue until tomorrow evening (Tuesday, August 25).

It is having a knock-on effect on the A6, which is also congested as motorists seek to avoid the slow-moving motorway. There are reportedly delays of around 11 minutes for those travelling northbound and an average speed of around 10mph.

The roadworks are reportedly due to a caravan crash in the early hours of this morning, which led to hour-long delays on the same stretch of motorway.

All traffic was stopped on the northbound carriageway near junction 33 at around 4.30am. Witnesses reported that a caravan had left the road.

Lancashire Police said the incident involved a single vehicle and there were no injuries. Traffic was later released, but the incident caused miles of congestion through the morning rush hour due to emergency repairs.
