Blackpool Vic deserves more NHS cash because of population surges caused by tourism, says Lorraine Beavers MP

Blackpool’s seasonal population surge and the funding pressures it creates was a key topic of discussion when Fleetwood MP Lorraine Beavers met Blackpool Victoria Hospital chief Maggie Oldham.

Discussions focused on the ongoing challenges facing the hospital, including high levels of deprivation, health inequalities and the need for funding that better reflects the town’s transient and tourist populations.

Ms Beavers also met staff at the hospital’s Emergency Department where matrons talked through changes they were making and the improvements they were seeing in patient experience.

“I have always believed that the best thing we can do for our NHS is to listen to frontline staff, using their experience and knowledge to develop changes which really make a difference, and this visit showed how important that it,” she said.

“When I visited the Emergency Department it was quiet and calm but we all know that isn't always the reality, especially during the current heatwave.

“It was clear however, that many of the staff are working incredibly hard to provide a better service to patients.

“I will continue to push for the government to listen to those who face the reality of working in the NHS everyday as we fight to improve patient experience and reduce health inequalities.

Janet Barnsley, Chief Operating Officer at Blackpool Teaching Hospitals commented: “Pressures on the NHS are felt year-round, not just in winter but during the summer months too. As a Trust, we are continually reviewing our processes and services so we can respond effectively to changing demand and deliver the best possible care for our communities.

“Whether people live locally or are visiting the area, we encourage everyone to think about how they can stay well. This could be as simple as staying hydrated during hot weather, understanding how to be safe around water, or preparing for winter by getting seasonal vaccinations – it all helps ease pressures on NHS services.

“If a visitor to the resort becomes unwell please use our health services wisely so that we can see and treat people at the right place and right time. Community pharmacies can offer advice and over-the-counter treatments, and for minor injuries we have two urgent treatment centres in Blackpool and Fleetwood. If you’re unsure, NHS 111 can help, and always call 999 in an emergency.

“I’d like to say thank you to all our colleagues for their ongoing hard work throughout the year and their commitment to providing caring, safe and respectful treatment to our patients.”
